Another weightlifter from Zamboanga City is making heads turn in the international stage.
Inspired by the breakthrough gold medal win by her popular ‘kababayan’ Hidilyn Diaz in the Tokyo Olympics, Rose Jean Ramos proved she’s also a winner by reaping two gold and one silver medals in the 2021 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth World Championships in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Ramos ruled in snatch and total by lifting 67 and 147kilograms, respectively, while settling for the silver in clean and jerk with 80 kgs in the women’s 45kgs division.
The 16-year-old earlier lifted 63 and 65 in snatch before turning to a heavier weight on her final attempt.
In the clean and jerk, Ramos first lifted 78 kgs then followed it up with an 80 kgs.
On her third attempt, she tried to lift 82kgs on her third attempt but failed.
But the two performances were enough for the gold in total.
Poland’s Oliwia Drzazga came in silver in total with 143, while Indonesia’s Najla Khoirunnisa finished bronze with 142.
Ramos’ feat came a day after Jeaneth Hipolito collected a bronze medal in the women’s 48kgs division.
Hipolito lifted 52kgs on her third attempt in snatch behind Turkey’s Ezgi Kilic (55) and Colombia’s Velez Estrada (53).
She finished fifth both in clean and jerk (62) and total (114).
