RR Pogoy reintroduced himself Sunday, July 10 by powering TNT to 106-92 win over Ginebra as the Tropang Giga capped their elimination campaign in the 2022 PBA Philippine Cup on a high note at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, July 10.
Pogoy dropped 30 points on a 12-of-23 shooting from the field as he spearheaded the Tropang Giga’s second half breakaway to finish the elimination with an 8-3 record and put themselves in a good position in the quarterfinals.
Mikey Williams bounced back from a lackluster performance last time out with 19 points while Glenn Khobuntin added 16.
Kelly Williams and Kib Montalbo chipped in 12 and 10, respectively, as TNT gave coach Chot Reyes and JP Erram a winning send-off before they join Gilas Pilipinas in Jakarta, Indonesia for the FIBA Asia Cup 2022.
TNT unloaded a 15-6 run to create the much-needed separation in the hard-fought contest that saw both teams engaged in a back-and-forth affair in the first half. That rally turned a slim 57-52 lead into a 72-58 lead late in the third frame.
Cautious of the Ginebra’s never-say-die spirit, TNT showed no letup in the final frame as Pogoy and Glenn Khobuntin connived in a scintillating 14-3 spurt which completely changed the complexion of the match as the Tropang Giga built its largest lead at 24 after that run, 96-72.
Five players scored in double-digits for Ginebra led by the 18 points of Japeth Aguilar. LA Tenorio and Christian Standhardinger added 15-points apiece but were not enough as the Gin Kings saw their four-game win streak halted, dropping them to a 6-2 record.
Meantime, San Miguel Beer showed better poise in the endgame, pulling off a pulsating 110-107 overtime victory over Blackwater.
June Mar Fajardo and Mo Tautuaa took charge in overtime, combining for 10 of the 13 points in the extension to finally shake off a pesky Bossing side to close in on one of the top two spots and the twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals
Fajardo posted a double-double of 25 points and 18 rebounds while Jericho Cruz followed up his 30-point outing last game with 25 points, four rebounds and four assists. CJ Perez added 23 points while Tautuaa chipped in 17 points and six rebounds.
The Beermen tried to pull away in the third frame as Cruz and Perez conspired on a furious 15-0 run to take an 82-65 lead heading into the final frame.
The Bossing, though, refused to go down without a fight and rallied back from the deficit to even take a three point lead, 95-92, after a Jvee Casio triple with 2:15 left in regulation.
