Stand-up comic Jo Koy is returning to Manila.
Well, on film at least.
He is to star in “Easter Sunday,” a film he describes as a “his love letter to the Filipino-American community in the US.”
“Easter Sunday” features an all-star Fil-Am comedic cast who have made a name for themselves globally including Lou Diamond Phillips, Eva Noblezada, Tia Carrere, Lydia Gaston, Eugene Cordero, Rodney To, Brandon Wardell and Joey Guila.
A showcase of Filipino excellence on the global stage, “Easter Sunday” brings Filipino culture to worldwide audiences.
In an interview, Jo Koy said he hopes the film will be a source of pride for US immigrants with Filipino roots.
“Before there was the internet, I was just looking for my own identity and try to find my voice and I saw Tia (Carrere) come on the screen. I was like ‘She looks like my cousin.’ And I couldn’t even watch the movie anymore. I wait till the credits and then I see Carrere, I knew she’s Filipino and that’s what it meant to me,” Jo Koy told The View.
“Easter Sunday,” from DreamWorks Pictures, is directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, from a script by Ken Cheng and Kate Angelo.
World boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has shown support for the film and uploaded a photo of the movie’s poster in his Instagram page.
He wrote, “Support tayo mga kababayan” using the hashtag #PinoyPride.
The film is produced by Rideback’s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich with Nick Reynolds, Joe Meloche, Jo Koy, Jessica Gao, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Cheng and Seth William Meier as executive producers.
From Universal Pictures International, “Easter Sunday” opens Aug. 31 in cinemas nationwide.
