Al Fernandez, Calib Sim Jr., Godfrey Taberna, Raul Angoluan and Jake Lacaba are known as “Para Boys” in the triathlon community.
They were born with physical disabilities
Their disabilities, however, is no hindrance in their desire to excel in their chosen sport.
For one, their courage and determination are so admirable they are now standing tall in their sport.
The youngest but the most fearless in the group, Lacaba was born with only a right – not mention to mention a cleft lip.
But like Sim (swimming with one leg also), Taberna (biking with a right clubbed-foot), and Angoluan (running without both arms), Lacaba is full of zest.
Small wonder left and right in various competitions – thanks largely to coach Vince Garcia.
Garcia even recalled the first time he met Lacaba. Instead of taking a bus, he biked approximately 130 kilometers from Tarlac just to meet his coach in Acropolis in Quezon City.
Lacaba raced his first competition – the Mt. Mayon Triathlon Championship — in Albay Province last Aug. 14.
While some are competing in the individual short distance category – a 500m swim, 25K bike, and 6K run course – the other are vying in the long-distance relay category.
While they are all armed with passion for excellence, they are short in budget as they intend to compete in various competitions.
To support their training, Garcia is spearheading a fundraising effort through his bike shop – The Pedal Trap.
All net revenues from sales of eScooters will go to the budget of Para-Boys.
“We are seeking assistance in raising funds by selling good quality eScooters. Message us if you’re open to helping us,” said Garcia.
While it is originally priced at P35,000, the Pedal Trap is giving discount.
