Causing huge commotion this early is the Metro Manila Film Festival 2022 entry, “My Father, Myself.”
The trailer of the film, which shows main stars Jake Cuenca and Sean De Guzman locking lips, has received mixed reaction.
Though there are those who deem it “brave,” “exciting,” there are others who were only too quick to express discomfort about it.
Some of the comments:
“Why are we normalizing same-sex relationship?”
“Another film depicting gays as immoral and sex hungry…kaya masama ang tingin sa atin ng karamihan.”
“Kabaklaan? Sa MMFF? Que Horror!”
“Isa sa criterias ng MMFF ang Filipino Cultural Values. Ito ba iyon?”
Film director Joel Lamangan is unmoved.
He told us, “Iba iba ang pananaw ng bawa’t isa sa atin pagdating sa sining. Kung sa iba malaswa, sa iba maganda. Kung sa iba pangit, sa iba obra maestra. Okay lang. Sanay na ako. I respect people’s opinion about it. Ang sa akin lang sana eh, panoorin muna nila bago nila husgahan.”
Both Jake and Sean echoed the same.
“The scene is not gratuitous. We didn’t do it simply to create controversy. It’s a major part of the story. So, like Direk Joel said, sana nga people won’t be too quick to judge the film seeing this one scene alone,” said Jake.
Sean added, “Okay lang mapagusapan. Ibig sabihin makabuluhan ang content ng pelikula namin. May sinasabi. Pero yun nga, sana panoorin nila muna. Maganda ang pelikula. May mensahe na kapupulutan ng aral.”
Produced by 3:16 Media Network in partnership with Mentorque Entertainment, “My Father, Myself,” as written by Quinn Carillo, tells the story of a closeted homosexual falling for a guy he adopted as a child. Making matters worse, the same guy will go on to impregnate his daughter.
Also starring Dimples Romana, it screens Dec. 25.
