Former world champion Carlos Yulo struggled in his pet event – floor exercise – and missed a spot in the finals at the 2023 FIG Individual Apparatus World Cup in Cottbus, Germany Thursday, Feb. 23.
Yulo, 23, finished only 20th in the 52-player field by tallying 13.400 – 6.400 in degree of difficulty and 7.000 in execution.
Reigning Olympic champion Artem Dolgopyat of Israel topped the qualifications with 14.833, while Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi and France’s Benjamin Osberger came in second and third with 14.600 and 14.066 scores
Even in rings competition, Yulo was obviously out of sync, settling only for 13th among 47 gymnasts with 13.833 after scoring 8.133 in execution in his 5.700 degree of difficulty routine.
Three-time world champion Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece led the qualifiers after posting 14.733, while Iran’s Mahdi Ahmad Kohani and Turkey’s Adem Asil came in second and third with 14.666 and 14.633.
Yulo still has a chance for medals when he competes in the qualifications of vault and parallel bars in the coming days.
