Carlos Yulo rediscovered his form and qualified to the final of his pet event – floor exercise – in the Fig Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series at the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar Wednesday, March 1.
The diminutive but valiant Tokyo Olympics veteran put on a near-flawless routine and finished second in the qualification with 14.500, just 0.100 behind top qualifier Artem Dolgopyat of Israel.
In his routine, Yulo got 8.000 in execution and 6.5 in degree of difficulty.
Other qualifiers include Great Britain’s Luke Whitehouse (14.166), Japan’s Kazuki Minami (13.966) and Takaaki Sugino (13.566), Sweden’s Kim Vanstrom (13.666), Turkey’s Adem Asil (13.600) and Spain’s Nicolau Mir (13.466).
Southeast Asian Games medalist Juancho Besana, however, failed to advance after landing 23rd with a score of 12.733.
Yulo, meanwhile, remained in the reserved list in the rings after finishing 11th in the apparatus. He scored 14.166 – 5.700 in degree of difficulty and 8.466 in execution.
Yulo and Besana are also scheduled to vie in horizontal bar, vault and parallel bars.
This is the second leg of the World Series with the first leg concluding only last week in Cottbus, Germany.
In that leg, Yulo failed to progress in his pet event, floor exercise, but managed to win a bronze medal in the parallel bars.
