University of Perpetual Help and College of Saint Benilde scored similar straight-set wins over their respective rivals and inch closer to retaining their titles in the NCAA men’s and women’s volleyball Tuesday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
Drawing inspired performances from leading MVP candidate Louie Ramirez and rookie sensation Jeff Marapoc, the Altas outlasted the San Beda Red Lions, 25-20, 25-16, 25-22, in the opener of their best-of-three title series.
Another win on Friday would enable the Sammy Acaylar-mentored Altas to complete a three-peat and nail their 13th title in the league.
Marapoc capped another dominant performabce with a powerful kill in the middle after the Red Spikers saved five match points, for the win that extended the Altas remarkable winning streak to 32.
The Lady Blazers were equally ruthless, scoring a 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 win over first-time finalist Lyceum of the Philippines University.
Gayle Pascual came through with 15 points, including three blocks, while Jade Gentapa and Michelle Gamit added nine and eight points, respectively, for the Lady Blazers.
Ramirez came through with 17 points and 13 receptions, Marapoc had 11-of-19 spikes to finish with 13 points and collected seven digs while Joshua Zareno chipped in 10 points.
