Tempo turns 41 today, emerging as a resilient tabloid amid the many challenges confronting the newspaper industry in this digital age.
During its formal launch in 1982, the Manila Bulletin management named this paper Tempo “to go with the times… to capture the pace, the rhythm of the city and of the country”.
Indeed, Tempo – through the years — has lived up to its mission.
It has kept the people informed of and entertained by news, as it trailed the paths of our leaders, newsmaker, celebrities, common folks, etc.
Its strength was even more tested during the Covid-19 pandemic when it chose to go on with its journey to convey the stories of struggles, hopes and resilience of the Filipino people.
Born on July 12, 1982 as a 12-page tabloid, Tempo leapt big when it first hit the streets, selling out all of its 80,000 copies.
It has adhered to its original premise of presenting news in clear and simple language in its three main sections: News, Entertainment and Sports – the selling points of the paper.
Today, majority of its contents still focus on human interest stories, the glitz and glamour of showbiz, and the action-packed world of sports, all published according to journalistic standards.
As we celebrate Tempo’s 41 years of existence today, we aspire to pursue another mission: to fight the “fake news” phenomenon. And we can only win this battle with the support of our loyal readers, friends and advertisers to whom we are so grateful for keeping this newspaper afloat.
