Karl Eldrew Yulo hopes to make his own name in gymnastics Karl Eldrew Yulo is hoping to make a name for himself and step out of the giant shadows of his more celebrated brother in Caloy Yulo.
Having almost the same looks and demeanor on the gymnastics floor as the two-time world champion, it was inevitable for 15-year-old to be compared to his ‘kuya’ although he is eager to be recognized using his own talents and not just as the brother to Caloy.
“Para malaman po nila na hindi lang po yung pangalan ko dinidikit lang lagi kay kuya which means ‘uy kapatid ni Carlos Yulo’ so I’m making my own name,” said the younger Yulo.
“Alam kong doon po ako nakilala pero ngayon po, gumagawa na rin po ako ng sarili kong pangalan,” he added.
Eldrew did seem to be brimming with potential of becoming one of the country’s elite athletes in the future especially after sweeping the six gold medals in the boys secondary artistic gymnastics in the recently concluded 2023 Palarong Pambansa.
He also instantly became a star with some of his fellow athletes and spectators asking for pictures with him after his flawless performances in the apparatus finals in the high bar, vault, pommel horse and floor exercise.
Of course, the younger Yulo is also already used to the spotlight, having participated in a couple of international tournaments. He even won a silver medal in vault in the Asian Junior Championships just last June.
Knowing full well that making a name for himself would be easier said than done, the focus for now, for Eldrew is to further hone his talents and be the best version of himself as he also hopes to win more international competitions just like his big brother.
As of now, Yulo and his trainer are already looking forward to preparing for the World Junior Championships set next year.
“Ang international ko po is yung Junior Worlds. ng sabi po ng coach is paghahandaan po namin ng isang taon. Mag uupgrade po ako ng skills para may ipang-represent po ako sa Philippines,” he added.
