Alex Eala produced another stellar performance by edging past No. 6 seed Turkish Zeynep Sonmez, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals of the W60 Nantes in France on Wednesday, Nov. 1 (Manila time).
In a tight and entertaining contest, It was Eala who produced the shots that mattered the most, especially in the first set where she rallied from a 4-2 deficit to force a tiebreak which she won – also by a whisker.
In the following set,the Turkish appeared to be in control after surging to a 4-1 lead.
But Eala refused to roll over and die as she staged another valiant comeback with a series of beautiful shots that saw her win the next five games to prevail.
The Filipina tennis star will face hometown bet and ranked no. 135 Leolia Jeanjean in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Nov. 2 (Manila time).
Eala, winner of two bronze medals in the Asian Games, is looking to annex her fifth pro title.
