Historical flicks are dime a dozen. Only a few of these however, are rendered accurate.
There are tons of reasons for these but, more often than not, this is mainly due to real events not allowing for enough drama, panache.
“12.12: The Day” is no exception.
The film tackles the military coup d’état that changed the socio-political landscape of South Korea one eventful night in 1980, as led by the notorious military dictator Chun Doo Hwan.
It is a huge hit in South Korea finding favor particularly among young viewers not aware of their country’s colorful past.
We are among those who believe it will also make its mark here. Not because Pinoys are currently besotted with everything Korean. The film is beautifully crafted; the dramatization gripping, thanks to excellent pacing and the superb acting of all involved.
That it also touches on politics, ambition, greed, morality, nationalism, makes it a must-watch.
For sure, many in our politically-troubled paradise will be able to relate.
“12.12: The Day” is now screening in SM Cinemas.
