Friendship, love, nostalgia.
Viva Film’s newest offering, “Sunny,” is all about these and more.
A local adaptation of a hit Korean movie, “Sunny,” features Viva’s original babies Vina Morales, Candy Pangilinan, Angelu de Leon, Ana Roces, Katya Santos, Sunshine Dizon.
It tells the story of high school friends who come together to grant a friend’s dying wish.
Said director Jalz Zarate, “Very challenging for me to adapt a story lalo na pag hit ang original kasi may comparison palagi. But I welcome the challenge kasi magagaling din ang artista namin rito.”
Writer Mel Mendoza-del Rosario added, “Gustong-gusto ni Boss Vic (del Rosario, Viva chief) ang story at pinilit niya talaga kami na gumawa ng Filipino version. So, we tweaked the story to add touches that are truly Pinoy.”
The film shifts between two timelines.
In the present day, we see Annie (Vina), a dedicated housewife and mother, bumping into Chona (Angelu), a high school friend.
She learns that Chona is battling terminal cancer and only has few months left to live.
Chona expresses her desire to see other members of their high school barkada called Sunny: Dang (Candy), Janet (Tanya Garcia) Becky (Katya), Gwen (Sunshine), and Sue (Ana).
Then, through a series of flashbacks, audiences are transported back 25 years when young Annie (Heaven Peralejo) just transferred schools. She is teased for being “provincial” until she meets the young Chona (Bea Binene), who became her ally.
It was Chona who introduced her to her the young Dang (Abby Bautista); Janet (Ashley Diaz); Becky (Heart Ryan); Gwen (Ashtine Olviga); and Sue (Aubrey Caraan).
As Sunny, they endure the highs and lows of high school.
As Chona’s health declines, how will they face the challenge of saying goodbye to a dear friend?
Watch as they celebrate friendship and make new memories together one last time.
“Sunny” opens in cinemas nationwide, April 10.
