It’s now nothing to lose and everything to gain at this point for Converge.
The FiberXers might be out of playoff contention already but head coach Aldin Ayo vowed to compete and try to put a winning end to a tumultuous season.
On Sunday, April 21, his team made a step towards that direction when it finally picked up its first win after nine games in the 2024 PBA Philippine Cup following a 104-99 victory over Meralco.
That subsequently ended a stretch of futility that saw them lose 12 straight games in the past four months dating back to the Commissioner’s Cup last December.
“We’re just going to compete. We want to end this conference on a high note,” said Ayo after the game. “We are going to do our best to compete, we have nothing to lose.”
The win might not have much impact on their playoff fate this season but it was still rewarding for Converge especially after a couple of frustrating games that it could have easily won.
Through the rough times, Ayo didn’t lose faith in his team. Bryan Santos repaid the trust with 22 points on seven triples, providing support the team has been searching for to help main guns Alec Stockton and Justin Arana.
“We’re excited for this win, di namin iniisip yung four losses eh. Nasa likod na namin yung eight straight losses,” said Ayo
“We didn’t lose hope. When the losses pile up, the more these players are motivated. As I’ve told you, we are excited for that first win,” he stressed
Converge still has two games left in its schedule against Barangay Ginebra and TNT – two teams that are still in the hunt for the playoff spot – and victories from those games would be a huge boost for the team moving forward.
“We want to exit the conference on a high note. Hopefully we can carry it on to the next conference,” he added
