University of Perpetual Help snapped a two-game losing skid with an 89-83 overtime win over Lyceum on Saturday, Oct. 26, in NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
The Altas stepped on the gas in the extra period by outscoring the Pirates, 12-6, to notch their sixth win against eight losses and keep their Final Four bid alive.
The win, which avenged Perpetual’s 64-62 first-round loss to Lyceum last Oct. 2, also put them half a game behind their victims as the Pirates skidded to 6-7 at sixth place.
JP Boral led Perpetual with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists, but it was Jearico Nunez and Mark Gojo Cruz who struck hardest in the extra five minutes where they conspired for nine points.
Nunez finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Cruz had nine points, seven boards and five assists.
Perpetual appeared in control after posting an imposing 67-59 lead, but fell into a maze of errors particularly in the crucial 34.8 ticks of the regulation.
A possession turnover and a traveling violation from Nunez and a steal from Mclaude Gaudana allowed Lyceum to convert a basket courtesy of Jonathan Daileg and extend the game.
But Perpetual was able to regroup and regain the momentum/
Christian Pagaran also shone for the Altas with 16 points and five rebounds, while John Abis had 12 points, 10 boards and seven assists.
JM Bravo sat down in the game for Lyceum due to precautionary measure after a scary incident involving a headbutt in their game against Arellano and was heavily missed as Renz Villegas and John Barba scored 23 and 17 points, respectively, in a losing effort.
The scores:
PERPETUAL 89 – Boral 18, Pagaran 16, Nuñez 15, Abis 12, Gojo Cruz 9, Manuel 7, Pizarro 6, Montemayor 4, Gelsano 2.
