Ginebra star Scottie Thompson continues his ascent in record books as he is one defensive rebound away to become the second fastest guard to reach the 2,000 mark next to PBA great Robert Jaworski Sr.
As per PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon, Thompson, who powered Ginebra to a 85-73 win against TNT and cut the series deficit to 2-1 in the Governors’ Cup Finals, has already accumulated 1,999 defensive rebounds after collaring four of its five on Friday, Nov. 1.
The former Most Valuable Player is one defensive rebound away from tying Jaworski’s achievement in 1982 when the Filipino basketball icon was then playing for Toyota before he moved to the Ginebra franchise.
Jaworski tallied the feat in his 381st game while Thompson might get it in his 385th or Game 4 on Sunday, Nov. 3.
The 31-year-old Thompson, however, wasn’t aware of it as he was focused on their championship quest.
“Siyempre naka-focus kami sa finals ngayon, eh no’ng sinabi aware na ako,” Thompson quipped.
“Kung makuha man, truly blessed, throughout my career may ganong milestone, but for me right now talagang naka-focus na muna ako sa finals, we’re still down,” he added.
Knowing he can get it this weekend, Thompson said it would be much sweeter if the Gin Kings manage to bounce back and level the series.
“Sana makuha ko ‘yon tapos makabalik kami sa series, I think that’s the best part para sa amin,” Thompson continued.
“Sobrang blessed kasi ganun, si Jawo [dating] nasa Ginebra tapos makukuha ng taga-Ginebra parin,” he added. “Truly blessed and honor [na] makuha ‘yong ganung klaseng honor.”
