We were surprised to see actor John Arcenas all made up as April Boy Regino.
He had the look down pat.
He further amazed us singing live the deceased singer’s signature hit “Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin.”
Apparently, he is also quite good at mimicking April Boy’s distinctive voice.
So how did he do it?
In an interview, John shared, “I simply did my research. I spoke to his wife, his children. I also watched his videos on YouTube. Then I practiced in front of a mirror.”
“As for the singing, I actually tapped a vocal coach because April Boy’s voice is so unique.”
John will resurrect April Boy in the film “IDOL: The April Boy Regino Story,” as directed by Efren Reyes, Jr.
He said, “I simply did my best to honor his legacy. I hope people will be inspired with his life story.”
According to Efren, the film is meant to motivate viewers.
“Dito, ipinakita naming kung paano nagpursige si April Boy hanggang marating niya ang rurok ng tagumpay,” he said. “Very inspiring ang story niya so hopefully mapanood ito ng marami.”
Producer Marynette Gamboa of Premiere Waterplus Productions shared the same view.
“Ang buong pakay namin ay makapagbigay inspirasyon sa mga tao,” she intoned. “Kapupulutan ng aral ang kwento ni April Boy Regino.”
To those not in the know, April Boy was huge in the 90s.
He charted a number of hits including “Paano Ang Puso Ko?,” “Sana’y Laging Magkapiling,” “Sabi Ng Puso Ko,” among many others.
He has also appeared in TV and on films.
He died in 2020 at 59, following bouts with cancer, diabetes.
“IDOL: The April Boy Regino Story,” will open in cinemas on November 27.
