President Marcos confirmed that he did not want Congress to pursue impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte as doing so would just be a waste of time.
Marcos said this after a text message—supposedly coming from him—asking Congress to not file impeachment complaints against his estranged vice president got leaked on social media on Thursday, Nov. 28.
The text message described Vice President Duterte as “unimportant” and trying to impeach her would just distract the government from serving Filipinos.
In an interview yesterday morning, the President confirmed the legitimacy of the text message and doubled down on his opinion that the Vice President is not important.
“Well, it was actually a private communication but na-leak na—yes,” he told reporters.
“Because that’s really my opinion. This is not important. This does not make a difference to even one single Filipino life. So why waste time on it?” he added.
According to Marcos, no Filipino will benefit if Congress moves to impeach Duterte over her revelation that she had hired an assassin to kill him, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez if she got murdered.
“What will happen if somebody files an impeachment? It will tie down the House, it will tie down the Senate,” he said.
“It will just take up all our time and for what? For nothing, for nothing. None of this will help improve a single Filipino life,” he added.
“As far as I’m concerned, it’s a storm in a teacup,” he continued.
Despite this, President Marcos said he was still open to reconciling with Vice President Duterte.
“Never say never,” he responded when asked if he had reached a point of no return with the Vice President.
Early this week, President Marcos vowed on Monday to stand firmly against the death threats of Vice President Duterte. “‘Yan ay aking papalagan,” he said.
Marcos said Duterte should be made accountable for her statements as any assassination attempt against the President also raises concerns about the security of the nation and its citizens.
He added that such criminal attempts should never be overlooked.
