Many are wondering as to how Pops Fernandez and Martin Nievera are able to continue working together years after their breakup.
To those not in the know, Pops and Martin actually went their separate ways back in 1999, with their marriage officially annulled in 2000.
Despite this, they remain one of the more enduring musical duos in local entertainment, staging sold-out concerts year after year.
So, how are they able to do it?
Said Pops, “I think it all started with us realizing na, the partnership is bigger than the both of us. Na because of the fans, it’s still there, it still exists. Kahit na hindi na kami talaga, it still exists.”
“And we work well together,” intoned Martin. “I mean, we encounter problems once in a while, but when we’re together on stage and the music starts, we could still perform, we’re able to entertain regardless.”
“That’s the magic of Martin and Pops,” he added. “It’s the connection, the chemistry, and the history we’ve built over four decades. It’s something you can’t manufacture.”
“Not every love team can do this,” Martin went on. “So, we’re proud of that. We’re proud that we’re able to still be great together, even though we’re not together-together.”
As to fans believing there’s still a possibility of them getting back together, Pops retorted, “We understand that in their minds they still wish na magkakabalikan kami. But we’re not naman leading them on. We don’t pretend. What they see is what they get.”
“We don’t treat our audience like they’re stupid, like they’re dumb, like they don’t know the truth,” Martin stated. “They know everything about us, so we’re definitely not fooling them for the sake of money.”
“The thing is, we really work well together. This is really a great team, whether or not we have a past. And I think that’s important for us: To continue doing this for as long as there is a demand and an audience.”
The two are to perform at Mall of Asia Arena on Feb. 7 in a concert titled “Always & Forever,” as produced by Viva Live, DSL Productions, and Starmedia Entertainment.
