Manila, Philippines – A party-list lawmaker has challenged local and national legislators in the country to observe a checklist of rights of children that are contained in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Bagong Henerasyon Partylist Rep. Bernadette Herrera-Dy filed House Resolution No. 1914 that initially called on her colleagues in the House of Representatives to adopt a uniform children’s checklist in guaranteeing that the internationally-recognized rights of children are not violated in the provisions of legislative proposals they file.
Hererra Dy, vice chairperson of the House Committee on Children’s Welfare, said the checklist will also serve as a guide that legislators may adopt as they consider action on pending bills and resolutions.
“The checklist contains an inventory of all rights thatchildren must enjoy. We hope all legislative proposals passed by local or national legislative bodies will conform with the list,” stated Herrera-Dy during the recent celebration of the 22nd anniversary of the UNCRC. (Ben R. Rosario)
