The Supreme Court was asked yesterday to nullify for “lack of sufficient basis” President Duterte’s Proclamation No. 216 which imposed martial law and suspended the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus in Mindanao as a result of the attacks by the Maute Group in Marawi City.
In a petition, the minority bloc in the House of Representatives led by Albay Rep. Edcel C. Lagman told the SC:
“The President’s proclamation of martial law in Mindanao has no sufficient factual basis as it is feebly based on mostly contrived and/or inaccurate facts, self-serving speculations, enumeration of distant occurrences, and mere conclusions of fact and law on the purported existence of ‘rebellion or invasion’.”
The SC is expected to tackle the petition today as it resumes its full court sessions after a month-long decision writing period. (Rey G. Panaligan)
