Alyssa Valdez played like a wounded beast as undermanned Bureau of Customs outhustled a tough Laoag side, 18-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-9, late Wednesday night for a share of the lead in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The 22-year-old former Ateneo standout unleashed a career-high and league-best record 39 points built on 29 kills, two blocks and eight aces for the BoC Transformers, who missed the services of two Thai imports and local recruits Pau Soriano and Lilet Mabbayad.
Valdez’ performance eclipsed the previous record of Sontaya Keawbundit in the Season 7 First Conference in 2010 where the Thai import exploded with 38 points for Ateneo.
Apart from Valdez’s impressive numbers, the spiker dubbed as “The Phenom” also contributed 17 digs in the non-scoring department.
“Masaya yung team kasi naglaro kami not only for the imports, but also for the teammates na hindi nakalaro today,” said Valdez, who was acquired from BaliPure for this conference.
“Siguro yun ang inspiration namin in this game. We really helped each other. Kasi kapag binigay mo yung 101 percent mo, babalik naman yung reward,” the Batangueño native added.
It was the second straight win for Customs after beating University of the Philippines last Monday. They tied with University of Santo Tomas at the helm.
Customs played with only 10 players in the match after Thais Kanjana Kuthaisong and Nattanicha Jaisaen were not cleared to play due to technical problems with their papers, and starters Pau Soriano and Lilet Mabbayad have yet to settle their issues with their other club team, Standard Insurance Navy.
Their absence, however, didn’t hamper the spirits of the BoC Transformers as they rose from a 6-all deadlock in the deciding set courtesy of Valdez.
