University of the Philippines and National University preserved their immaculate records after dominating their respective foes in the PG Flex Linoleum UCBL Pre-Season tournament Tuesday at the SGS Gym in Quezon City.
The Fighting Maroons stepped their foot on the gas pedal in the second frame and blow the Far Eastern University Tamaraws into smithereens, 72-56 while the Bulldogs clobbered the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 87-59.
Carl Tamayo showed the way for the reigning UAAP champions with 19 points and six rebounds while Sean Torculas and Terrence Fortea backed him up with 12 and 10.
The Fighting Maroons solidified their spot atop the Group A standings with a perfect 4-0 slate.
The Bulldogs, on the other hand, leaned on a huge third quarter explosion to break the game wide open and list their fourth-straight win in as many games. John Gallinato scored 14 points to lead NU’s team effort to also tighten its grip on the top spot in Group B.
Meantime, University of Perpetual Help shackled Adamson University, 74-56 while Emilio Aguinaldo College outlasted Olivarez College, 76-73 to barge into the quarterfinals.
Kim Aurin dropped 20 points as the Altas rose to a 3-1 record in the standings. Ralph Robin also waxed hot from beyond the arc with five triples to spearhead the Generals with 21 points to wrap up the eliminations with a 3-2 record.
UP and NU close out their elimination campaigns against Olivarez and Perpetual, respectively, on Thursday with both teams determined to go into the knockout quarterfinal round “high” on a five-game sweep.
