Known for producing box office movies like “English Only Please,” “#WalangForever,” “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank,” and “Ekstra,” Quantum Films now ventures into the TV scene in collaboration with the Philippines’ leading broadcast company, GMA Network.
Their first salvo is the feel-good and inspiring series “What We Could Be,” which airs starting today, Aug. 29 on GMA Telebabad.
Three of the country’s sought-after and talented stars headline this much awaited primetime soap: Miguel Tanfelix as Franco, Ysabel Ortega as Cynthia and Yasser Marta as Lucas.
Miguel shares that this is by far the most mature role he has ever portrayed.
“Isa ito sa mga dream role ko, someone with a complex background kaya very mysterious. Perfect project din siya para sa age namin dahil ito ‘yung phase na ang daming uncertainties sa buhay, hindi pa masyadong kilala ang sarili and may mga what ifs.”
Ysabel, on the other hand, admits that she feels pressured on her first lead role.
“Definitely kinakabahan ako pero at the same time, confident ako na maganda ang nagawa namin. Nakatulong din sa akin ‘yung support system at teamwork namin ni Miguel. This project is a good chance for us to experiment and learn as actors.”
Yasser considers this show as a major turning point in his career. “Ang laking project nito at achievement siya sa buhay ko. Nagsimula ako from scratch sa showbiz and ngayon, binigyan ako ng opportunity to work with a great cast. Para sa akin, kahit ano namang i-offer na project, lagi ko lang binibigay ang best ko.”
Set in the quaint town of Sta. Barbara, the series follows the relatable story of three young individuals who juggle personal aspirations, family problems and relationship issues while reaching for their dreams.
Cynthia is a determined young woman who came from a poor but happy family. She works as a nurse to sustain the needs of her loved ones. In an unfortunate event, Cynthia was laid off from her job which leads her to take on a new gig as a homecare nurse for a grumpy old lady.
As she navigates this new journey, challenges come along the way. She then finds support from her family and a stranger named Franco.
He is charismatic and an asset in the world of business, but he hides many deep secrets and heartaches. Later on, Cynthia falls in love with Franco but as their relationship deepens, Franco shows his other side. She begins doubting him and questions if he is still worth fighting for.
Meanwhile, Lucas enters the life of Cynthia. Behind his romantic playboy persona is actually a very sensitive guy. Lucas wants to break away from his dysfunctional family and build one filled with honesty. He will also try to mend Cynthia’s broken heart.
Is succeeding both in relationship and in career simply not possible? How far must someone go and sacrifice for the sake of his/her family?
Joining them is a powerhouse cast of some of the country’s most respected artists in film and television: Cinemalaya 2022 Best Supporting Actor Soliman Cruz as Tirso, the exemplary father of Cynthia; Aleck Bovick as Melba, the devoted and wise mother of Cynthia; Pamela Prinster as Criselda, the happy-go-lucky city girl who got lost in Sta. Barbara; Hailey Mendes as Vera, the spoiled daughter of a gangster; Lia Salvador as Eloisa, the supportive adoptee of Cynthia’s family; Bimbo Bautista as Gabby, the father of Lucas who is involved in a family conflict; EJ Jallorina, as Ate V, the optimistic and funny best friend of Cynthia; Joel Saracho as Mang Tonyo, a man full of wisdom and a witness to the dark past of Franco’s family; Art Acuña as Bruno, a gangster who is trying to change and become a businessman; Vince Crisostomo as Justin, the brother of Cynthia who is under a lot of pressure as a teenager; Joyce Ann Burton as Helen, the strict and overprotective mother of Franco; and Celeste Legaspi as Lola Leonora, an ill-tempered grandma taken care of by Cynthia.
GMA’s First Vice President for Program Management Department Joey R. Abacan reveals why the network green-lighted the first collaboration with Quantum Films.
“It was a walk in the park and I wouldn’t endorse it kung hindi maganda. When I watched the output, nagulat ako. Kasi sa script pa lang at pagkaka-direk, ang husay na. I hope masundan pa ang aming collaborations.”
Quantum Films Chief Operating Officer Atty. Joji Alonso, in turn, is grateful to GMA-7 for giving them the platform to tell this heartwarming story.
“I’ve been pitching kay Joey for so many years dahil gustung-gusto ko talaga gumawa ng TV series. GMA was very helpful in seeing this project through. Very smooth-sailing ang lahat and ang babait ng mga Kapuso.”
“What We Could Be,” under the helm of award-winning director Jeffrey Jeturian, airs weeknights at 8:50 pm on GMA and on GTV from Monday to Thursday at 11:30am and every Friday at 11pm.
Viewers abroad can also catch it on GMA Pinoy TV.
