Sand boarding for all

Many are surprised that we have deserts and sand dunes in the Philippines.

There’s the famous Lapaz Sand Dunes in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, for instance.

Outdoor activities like sand boarding and sand bashing can be done in Lapaz Sand Dunes.

Sand Boarding was first done back in 3200 BC in Egypt when the Pharaohs rode wood and clay. The modern sand board is now made of fiberglass, plastic and wood.

According to Marc Nicolas, a member of the Laoag Eco-Adventure Development Movement, the sand in the sand dunes came from the West Philippine Sea. The wind brings the sand and forms sand mounds.

Sand boarding can be compared to skateboarding. American surfers invented skateboarding in the 1950’s. When there was no wave, surfers used the wood from crates to practice their surf.

Tommy Esquerra was the “Matanglawin Adventurista” who tried the sand boarding activities in an episode of our Matanglawin TV show. He said that sand boarding became easier through time. Falling did not hurt because the sand was fine and soft.

Tommy also tried sand bashing.
