NCAA champion Mapua and former UAAP titlist National University kept their 1-2 positions in the interesting chase for semis berths by pulling off contrasting wins in the 10th Freego Cup held over the weekend at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.

The Red Robins rode on the hot-shooting duo of Brian Lacap and Clint Escamis to crush the Lyceum Baby Pirates, 97-68, while the NU Bullpupscame through with an explosive fourth quarter performance to complete an 82-74 come-from-behind win over the University of the East Junior Warriors, 82-74.

Lacap knocked down five triples to finish with 19 points while Escamis added three treys for 18 points for the Red Robins who improved to 6-1.

Aside from regaining the solo lead, Mapua likewise boosted its bid to secure the top spot and the lone twice-to-beat bid in the semis.

Standing its way is NU which won its last two games for a 5-1 mark in the annual preseason tournament also supported by Smart, Powerhouse and Home Depot.

This time, it was Cyril Gonzales who led NU’s well-balanced attack with 18 points spiked by two triples aside from grabbing eight boards.

Also gaining ground for a berth in the semis was La Salle Greenhills which hacked out an 87-79 win over the Jose Rizal University – thanks to Macoy Marcos’ stellar showing.

The Greenies hiked their win-loss mark to 5-2.
