NBI probes ex-fiscal’s slaying

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to probe the slaying of a former prosecutor in Mandaluyong City over the weekend.

Aguirre directed the NBI to conduct a case build-up on the killing of former Mandaluyong city prosecutor Pablito A. Gahol, and “if evidence warrants, to file appropriate charges thereon.”

“Further, Director (Dante) Gierran shall submit a report to the Office of the Secretary of Justice on its current activities related to the implementation of this Order,” Aguirre said in his order.

Gahol, barangay chairman of Barangay Maumay, Mandaluyong City, was gunned down by motorcycle-riding assailants on Sunday morning.

Police investigators said the victim had just attended Mass with his family at a chapel near the National Mental Health Institute (NMHI) when two gunmen arrived on two motorcycles and shot him.

Witnesses said other parishioners and local residents in the area of Mataas na Paaralang Neptali Gonzales scampered for safety after hearing successive gunshots from Gahol’s attackers. Police said Gahol sustained multiple bullet wounds in the body, and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Victor Potenciano Hospital.

The victim’s wife and daughter were not harmed in the attack.

Recovered from the crime scene were 10 empty shells of still unknown caliber.
