NOTHING ROMANTIC: “I treat her like a sister,” up and coming singer Migz made it clear, as if to douse talk of a possible brewing romance between himself and his singing partner of a year or so, Maya.
Migz and Maya make up the singing duo of the same name that recently launched a new album, their first, courtesy of Star Music. The partnership was the idea of their manager, Perry Lansigan, who brought them to ABS-CBN for a record deal.
Jonathan Manalo, Star Music executive, said they welcomed the idea of signing a singing duet as a breath of fresh air.
“There hasn’t been a duo signed to a label in years. We thought they could fill a certain need,” he said at the media launch.
Maya says of their tandem: “Diverse kami. Magkaibang-magkaiba. We mix our flavors. Ako pop-dance, si Migz, alternative.”
Manalo says the couple’s sound caters to popular Pinoy taste for romance songs, the soothing, easy listening type.
It’s the sort of companion CD to pack during trips or in the car.
Hugot feels? Get them from this young, talented couple, and more.
“Distinct ang voices nila. Together, their blending is amazing,” says record producer Jack Rufo, formerly of 90s boy band Neocolors.

TALENTED MUSICIANS BOTH: Both Migz and Maya are budding musicians, who write songs and play musical instruments.
They first gained recognition when they recorded a cover of “Ambon,” a 2016 Himig Handog entry that was picked as theme song of the Star Cinema movie “Always Be My Maybe.”Always Be My Maybe”.
Prior, they had been performing in clubs either as a duo or as solo acts.
Miguel Haleco, a music production graduate from College of St. Benilde, became an online sensation for his song covers on YouTube.
Maya (Angeli Mae Flores) was formerly a part of Pan-Asian girl group Blush. She was also a grand finalist in TV contest “Star for a Night.”
Their album is a collection of acoustic, easy-listening originals and covers, including “Ambon,” as well as the carrier single “Hibang,” another entry from Himig Handog.
It also carries their versions of “Stay,” “One More Chance,” “Suntok sa Buwan,” “Paano Na Kaya,” “Ipagpatawad Mo,” “Paano Ba Magmahal,” Hanggang, and “Lihim.” The last song is Migz’s own composition.
The album can now be streamed on Spotify and is now available at all record bars for P199. (NESTOR CUARTERO)
