More names are emerging to compose the membership of the Constitutional Commission (Con-Com), the body conceived to assist Congress amend the Constitution.
This developed as House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez prepares to finalize the draft of an executive order creating the Con-Com to help Congress, acting as Constituent Assembly (Con-Ass), in drafting the fundamental law of the land.
Earlier, this space expressed its elation over the naming or enlisting of some notable and trustworthy citizens led by former Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno, former Senate President Nene Pimentel, lawyer Reuben Canoy, Dean of San Beda Law School Fr. Ranhilio Aquino, Fr. Joaquin Bernas, Prof. Jack Jimenez, and representatives from non-government organizations (NGOs), academe, women, youth, and other sectors of society.
Other prominent personalities being surfaced who may be included for membership in the Con-Com are former Gov. Homobono Adaza, lawyer Romy Macalintal, former Congressman Allen Salas Quimpo, columnist SolitaMonsod, dormer UP President Dodong Nemenzo, former Senator Rene Saguisag, and former Ambssador Rigoberto Tiglao as members.
The Con-Com will be composed of some 25 to 30 members who have proven integrity and reliability. As we said ealier in this column, “Let us have faith in the Con-Com” because Congress have failed us on various vital issues as anti-dynasty and anti-US bases measures.
The wisdom of President Duterte, in pushing charter change will prove itself as valid and urgent, with the creation of Con-com in view of the perceived motion that Congress cannot be trusted to enact anti-dynasty laws that would democratize the playing field of every Filipino.
As the level of the necessity of charter change gains momentum of credibility and respect, and its spectable dramatizes, let us unite as one country and one nation to have an independent, free new Philippines.
