Having Calvin Abueva inside the PBA bubble is already a small victory for the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters, interim coach Topex Robinson said Wednesday morning.
“I’m just so grateful that Calvin was given the opportunity to join us at Clark,” said Robinson, who the other day accompanied Abueva during a meeting with officials from the Games and Amusements Board.
The PBA allowed Abueva to join the Fuel Masters in Clark, Pampanga but only limited to participate in 5-on-5 scrimmages.
Whether he’ll be given the green light by Commissioner Willie Marcial to suit up in time for the season restart on Oct. 11 remains a big question.
But for now, Robinson is glad that Abueva is part of the Phoenix contingent.
“Though there is still no guarantee if he will be able to play or not, him being allowed to practice will be a small win for us,” added Robinson, who also created excitement with his Instagram post shortly after their visit at the GAB office in Makati City.
Robinson whetted the appetite of fans by posting a photo of him and Abueva with the caption “Northbound.”
Phoenix team manager Paolo Bugia later confirmed that Abueva was permitted to participate in practices.
The Fuel Masters coach said the overwhelming support, especially those who used the #LetCalvinPlay on social media, should serve as a good reminder for Abueva.
“It’s a reminder to Calvin that he had and he will impact the lives of others,” said Robinson. “He needs to use his gift to serve others!”
