Sta. Elena took advantage of an undermanned Air Force with an easy 25-18, 25-20, 25-22 victory yesterday to gain the early solo lead in the men’s division of the Premier Volleyball League at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Sta. Elena Wrecking Balls needed 61 minutes in disposing the Jet Spikers, who are still missing the services top collegiate players Bryan Bagunas, Fauzi Ismail and Kim Malabunga.
Berlin Paglinawan flexed his muscles and buried 16 points, including 14 attacks for Sta. Elena, which exposed Air Force’s erratic plays.
The Wrecking Balls took advantage of the Jet Spikers’ 30 woeful errors, with former University of the Philippines standout Evan Raymundo, ex-University of the East mainstay Edward Composano, and Ace Mandani conspiring for 18 points.
Air Force Coach Rhovyl Verayo stuck with what he had with Alnakran Abdilla scoring 18 points and Jeff Malabanan adding nine points.
Niño Jeruz and Rudolfo Labrador finished with five points each.
Bagunas, Ismail and Malabunga have yet to suit up for Air Force as they are currently competing with National University for the UAAP title against Ateneo.
Cignal, meantime, claimed its first triumph at the expense of Instituto Estetico Manila with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-22 decision.
