Manila Prince Hotel, a 300-room business hotel at the corner of United Nations Avenue and San Marcelino Street, will play host to the first Tempo Inter-Schools rapid chess championships on July 20.
The one-day, FIDE-rated event will be held at the spacious grand ballroom that can hold up to 550 people.
“It’s a perfect venue for chess. Easily accessible, it has a number of function rooms that can cater to all type of chess events,” said Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales who will serve as tournament director.
Gonzales said the venue brings prestige to the event which marks the newspaper’s 37th anniversary on July 12.
“We would like to thank Manila Prince Hotel for being our partner in the inaugural staging of the tournament,” said Tempo editor Rey Bancod.
Presented by Manila Prince Hotel, the tournament is sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and supported by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), SM Supermalls, Mighty Sports Apparel and Accessories, 1-Pacman Partylist and ICTSI.
The seven-round Swiss System event is open to all college, high school and elementary students.
Each category features Open and women’s contests, bringing to six the number of individual titles at stake.
The top scorer after the seven-round Swiss System event will be declared champion. Time control is 15 minutes with 10 seconds increment.
The team champion, on the other hand, will be determined by the top scorer of each school in six categories.
