A total of 121 convicts freed due to the implementation of the Good Conduct Time Allowance law have so far surrendered to various police stations across the country.
But the number of those who surrendered is way below the almost 2,000 GCTA convicts that are set to be accounted by the government.
The Philippine National Police list does not include those who surrendered to the Bureau of Corrections and other government agencies.
Police Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac, PNP spokesman, said that 25 of those who surrendered have been turned over to the Bureau of Corrections while the rest are still undergoing the necessary processing of papers.
Based on the PNP data, the Cagayan Valley region has the most number of those who surrendered with 32, followed by Mimaropa (Mindoro Occidental and Oriental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan) with 34. Bicol has 13 surrendered convicts while Central Visayas has 10.
Of the GCTA-freed convicts, 43 of them were convicted of rape, 38 had life imprisonment due to murder, while 12 were convicted of robbery with homicide.
Other heinous crimes committed by the freed convicts were rape with homicide, robbery with rape, parricide, and those related to illegal drugs. (Aaron Recuenco)
