Bulakan Mayor Vergel Meneses became the newest sports great to have been infected by the dreaded coronavirus (COVID-19) disease.
In a Facebook video post on Friday, the 51-year-old former PBA MVP announced he tested positive for the deadly virus, a development that saddened his loyal supporters.
Meneses said may have contracted the virus while in the course of performing his task as he was busy attending to the needs of his constituents since the pandemic gripped the country in mid-March.
On Thursday, Meneses said he underwent RT-PCR test and it yielded a positive result. He is asymptomatic but is currently in self-isolation.
The many-time member of the PH team even warned the public to take the fight against COVID-19 seriously, saying: “Sa kabila na ako po ay sports enthusiast at di nagpapabaya sa exercise at iba pang prevention, dumapo [pa rin] ang sakit na ito.”
“Walang matanda or bata, mahirap or mayaman, official man o simpleng mamamayan, walang pinapalampas na mabibiktima ang virus,” he warned.
Meneses said he’s still performing his duty so as not to delay the services to the people of Bulakan.
He has already ordered to close his office for disinfection. It will open on Monday.
The former men’s basketball coach of Jose Rizal University also advised his constituents to continue observing health protocols to prevent the spread of the virus.
